Hearing and Vision Loss or Impairment: Parent Information Session
Hearing and Vision Loss or Impairment: Parent Information Session
In this session, parents will gain an understanding of the spectrum of hearing and vision loss and how to support their children with these challenges.
They’ll learn practical ways to make their home more accessible, including adjusting lighting, furniture, and technology to help their child see and hear better. Parents will discover tools like hearing aids, magnifiers, captions on videos, and apps that turn speech into text. They’ll also learn simple changes such as using high-contrast colors, creating clear paths for movement, and using communication boards to help their child feel more comfortable and independent. This training is essential for parents of children with disabilities to address hearing or vision challenges.

Accessible Schools and Classrooms: Educators Workshop
Accessible Schools and Classrooms: Educators Workshop
Teachers will learn how students with a primary disability often experience hearing and/or vision loss or impairment, and this session will provide information on this spectrum along with a range of supports to improve learning outcomes. Led by Hannah McPierzie, a Deafblind Senior Educator with lived experience, the workshop offers practical strategies for creating inclusive classroom environments. Research shows that students with deafblindness are less likely to have successful educational outcomes, but early identification and support can make a difference. Hannah shares her insights from both her experience as a former education support teacher and as someone with dual sensory loss. The workshop is suitable for teachers, education support staff, and whole-school development days.
